Making BILLET Aluminium Plates for the TWIN Rotary Wankel Engine

4. des.. 2020
388 120 Ganger

This time I'm making the aluminium plates that go between the rotor housings. They have to be extremely flat and smooth. The original plates on the O.S wankel are made of aluminium, which means it's a perfect material to use.
What makes me somehow sad is that I'm waiting for really simple parts and tools to arrive, but due to the pandemic the delivery times are very slow. We're also in lockdown, meaning that I can't go out in the hardware stores because they are closed in my country.
I will try to have weekly updates on the project. The running video isn't far, if you think about it this project is not extremely complicated (except the eccentric shaft) so it shouldn't take that much.

  • Greetings friend. You are just a talented person. I really liked your work, as if you are from another planet. In Russia, ordinary people do not do such things. There is not enough money and equipment. Greetings from Russia

  • Kerosene works much better than isopropyl alcohol for cutting aluminum. Legit cutting fluid will provide better cooling but not quite the same lubricity, but if you can't get that, use kerosene. Much cheaper than isopropanol as well.

  • Rubbing alcohol as a coolant for lathe work? I have never seen that before. Is it the evaporative quality or because it leaves no residue? I guess I can Google it. But then I lost 28 seconds of my life typing this. Ok, I am leaving my comment and Googling.

  • "Perfectly flat and parallel surfaces", assuming your clearly scratched table you were measuring on is also perfectly flat and parallel (hint: metal tables never are). Also, how about the side surface, that might not be square at all compared to the larger surfaces. Cool to watch though =)

  • I take it the shavings will be melted sometime after building either a Norman, Judson, or scroll-type supercharger, as those are the most likely to work on a small sized engine - given a turbo or roots didn't seem to show much results due to scaling issues. (And a bit proportionally oversized too vs. their normal counterparts due to mass vs. volume considerations.) But for now, the work on the Wankel continues...

  • You think it would be a good idea to have the faces of the intermediate plates chrome or nikasil plated like a 2 cycle cylinder? I'm not sure if the original plates had a coating but it seems like it would be a good idea.

    Steve HuffmanSteve Huffman4 måneder siden
    • "Flat" is relative. If you look at the last indicator sweep, the part's surface is within .01mm, or slightly less than .4 thou. I wouldn't expect that out of the sort of lathe your average hobbyist can afford.

  • An interesting and useful modification for your tapping setup could be an air inlet that is closed during hand tapping but when you press a lever or the like, the inlet opens shooting compressed air into paddle shapes on shaft for turning tap counter clockwise and out of a completed threaded hole.
